Basics of Crafting Essences

Introduction

Hello there and welcome to another entry in our Basics of Crafting Series! In this quick guide we will focus on Essences. What are they? What are some general uses for them? How do I best use them?

What are they and where to find them

Essences were introduced in, you guessed it, Essence League! During your travels in Wraeclast you may encounter monsters that appear to be frozen in inside of a crystalline structure with some essences above their head. These rare mobs will on average be more powerful than normal rares you will encounter and as a reward will drop the essences that were listed above their head!

Common Uses

With that out of the way one of the common uses for lower level essences are as a replacement for Alchemy orbs on your gear while leveling through the acts to get easy upgrades to help fill in stats you need on your gear.

But we all know that’s not why you are here, let’s get onto some of the more interesting things about essences and how to use them.

First I highly suggest you watch this video here as it has most of what is written in this guide in video form along with a quick tutorial on how to use craftofexile.com’s crafting simulator with essences.

You are probably looking at the essences you got while you were leveling and early mapping and they all are lower tier and you are thinking to yourself why would I ever use these? Well the good news is you can actually upgrade them by either using the Upgrade button at the bottom of the Essence Stash Tab if you have one or by selling 3 of any tier of an essence to a vendor and getting 1 of the next highest tier back.

The most common and powerful way to use essences is to have a fractured item and then spam the essence that gives the particular stat you want to guarantee 2 powerful stats for your build on that particular piece of gear.

Another more niche use is that you can actually use Essences to get affixes on some gear that could not normally be rolled on it. Whether it be attributes on a belt or using the rarer “Corrupted Essences” like Essence of Hysteria, Essence of Insanity, Essence of Horror, or Essence of Delirium,

You may be wondering how to get those last 4 and it’s easier than you think if you are lucky, You just use a Remnant of Corruption on a monster frozen that has any of the 4 “Purple Essences” above their head Shrieking Essence of Scorn, Shrieking Essence of Envy, Shrieking Essence of Misery, Shrieking Essence of Dread, and those have a chance to turn into one of the 4 Corrupted Essences.
