Introduction

Hello there and welcome to another entry in our Basics of Crafting Series! In this quick guide we will focus on Fossils. What are they? What are some general uses for them? How do I best use them?

What are fossils and how to get them

Fossils were introduced in Delve league and delving is still the most common way to get them and the only way to get resonators (besides some fringe cases like ritual). You will find resonators in Resonators stashes while you are delving and fossils will be clickable rock like structures you will also find while toiling away in the mines.

There are 4 types of resonators that are differentiated by the number of sockets they have from 1 up to 4 They are Primitive Chaotic Resonator Primitive Chaotic Resonator, Potent Chaotic Resonator Potent Chaotic Resonator, Powerful Chaotic Resonator Powerful Chaotic Resonator, Prime Chaotic Resonator Prime Chaotic Resonator

A key thing to remember is that more sockets is not always better when it comes to fossils, There are uses for each of the resonators

How to use Fossils

Fossils are used to help you more deterministically craft items. With fossils you can block modifiers from rolling on items, guarantee that certain types of modifiers will roll on them and so much more!

Some examples of different fossils you may use are:

Pristine Fossil Pristine Fossil to guarantee life rolls and make sure that you won’t receive any defense related modifiers like Energy Shield, Armour, or Evasion.

Jagged Fossil Jagged Fossil to guarantee more physical rolls and remove the possibility of Chaos rolls.

Metallic Fossil Metallic Fossil to guarantee more Lightning rolls and no physical rolls.

Corroded Fossil Corroded Fossil to guarantee more More Physical Ailment or Chaos Ailment rolls and remove the possibility for Elemental rolls.

Now something interesting is that if we use a Corroded Fossil Corroded Fossil, a Jagged Fossil Jagged Fossil, and a Metallic Fossil Metallic Fossil we now can no longer roll Chaos, Physical, or Elemental so you can see how powerful this can become for blocking modifiers we don’t want!

Craftofexile.com is a wonderful tool to figure out what the best combination of fossils to use to get your required results and we go over how to determine that in the video here

A few more niche fossils have special uses which we will go over here:

Perfect Fossil Perfect Fossil allow you to get above the normal limit of 20% quality on an item, when you use a perfect fossil it will reroll the quality to a value between 15% and 30%. We suggest if you are going to do this you ALWAYS do it before starting to craft on an item as it WILL reforge the item with every use of a perfect fossil as you try to hit that magical 30%.

Gilded Fossil Gilded Fossil are a fun way to take items you plan on vendoring and gambling with them as they will give it an implicit that makes it sell for a random amount and type of currency items.

Glyphic Fossil Glyphic Fossil will add a random Corrupted Essence modifier (more info on those can be found here in our Basics of Crafting Essences ) as part of the reforging process from the fossil craft.

Hollow Fossil Hollow Fossil will use a suffix slot to add an abyssal socket to an item keep in mind this will reduce the total number of possible links on an item by 1.
